Lighting for your Wedding Marquee

Katy Coltart - Thursday, June 15, 2017

Even the most spectacular and adorned marquee is not complete without the addition of beautiful wedding lighting. Queensberry Event Hire can supply stylish, modern designed marquees for any special event or occasion and accessories to go with it!

Festoon lighting is a popular option used to create spectacular effects both indoor and out. With bulb spacing of 0.5 metres the festoon lighting can be installed with cables of varying lengths depending on the desired effect. They can simply be hung from the roof of the marquee as they are, or with hanging paper lanterns using socket extensions to hang at a variety of different heights. The festoon lighting emits a warm glow to finish off the overall effect of the marquee.

The design and structure of the pole marquees allow for the perfect hanging of beautiful Montreux Chandeliers. Available in either cream or black these chandeliers are the finishing touch to the most stylish of affairs. The simple elegance of the centrally hanging chandeliers add a contemporary feel to the event and can be dimmed to alter the atmosphere or the event.

Fairy Lights

One of the most versatile of the lighting options available to hire, fairy lights in either warm yellow or cool white can be hung almost anywhere in the marquees. Wrapped round the poles or from the roof of the marquee, fairy lights are the perfect solution to creating an instant atmosphere in any marquee.

Black Starcloth

Bring a piece of the night sky into the marquee. Black Starcloth is usually applied over the dance floor to recreate the stunning effect of the stars shining brightly in the night sky. Thousands of led lights are built into the black cloth in order to resemble the stars at night.

Led Up Lights

LED up lights can also be installed to colours of your choice. These lights are fantastic for use in entrance pagodas or reception areas bring alive the theme or emphasise the colours of the wedding/event.

The atmosphere and feel of a marquee can be instantly changed or altered with the addition of wedding lighting. Choosing the right wedding lighting to create the desired effect is essential. Queensberry Event Hire are specialists in supplying marquees and helping you to recreate your vision for the event.

Our Guide to Plan your Wedding Online

Katy Coltart - Monday, December 19, 2016

Here at Queensberry, we’ve had a summer filled with stunning marquee weddings. A marquee wedding is an ideal option if you’re looking for a beautiful venue with personal creative control…you don’t need to worry about swirly carpet patterns or dodgy decorative elements that clash with your own unique design vision.   A marquee is ultimately a big, white box with huge creative potential and every little aspect of the space in your styling will need to be considered.  Luckily, there is an abundance of top quality services and suggestions online to help you with every small detail! Here are our top tips on where to look for marquee wedding inspiration.

Interior Design

Pinterest is the perfect place to look for ideas on how to fill your marquee space. The social bookmarking site, where users collect and share their favourite photos, is a visual wedding paradise – and all you need to do is find the pictures you like and recreate!

On our website we have Pinterest Save built into each page (the red button on the top left with the social media icons) which, when pressed, brings up all the images on the page of our website you are visiting and then allows you to pin those images to your own board – allowing you to clearly plan each part of the marquee. Why not create a board for the marquee style you like, a board for lighting, a board for wedding flowers, a board for bars/dance floors etc and pin our images to the board to help you plan and visualise your unique event!

Remember to have a peek on our Instagram Page, which shows how previous clients have decorated their marquee space to perfection.

When planning the interior of your wedding marquee, focus on creating a few key zones: Chill-Out: If all the celebrations take place within one main marquee then a chill-out zone is a must, and this is where you can go wild with your own design stamp. Keep the vibe inside comfy with our sofas and coffee tables or why not create a separate room and we can join a pagoda marquee to your main marquee, with optional clear walls and a glass door decorated with your choice of lights.

For additional wow factor, give your guests the ultimate entrance and chill out area, by adding an outdoor drinks and seating area lit by festoon lights with a firepit surrounded by benches and whisky barrels.

Bar: A space that’s guaranteed to get the most use, you can really go to town dressing it up. To make sure the area stands out, you could light up the roof overhead with paper lanterns, coloured festoons or LED fairylights or up-lights. You could also use an ivory or black starcloth behind the bar to add drama and provide the ultimate party experience! These multi-coloured lights can be set to twinkle and you can control the colours, brightness and flashing sequence. Our new, lighted circular bar is an exciting addition which will provide the perfect party focal point. Alternatively, we have classic corner bar units and rustic limewashed bar units, which could be dressed up with wooden or limewashed whisky barrels on either side holding draping foliage or hold displays and decorations. Write up the drink menu on the blackout chalk board or lean our cartwheel against the bar with the cocktails menu hooked to it… there are so many options to choose from!

A wedding isn't a wedding without floral fancies. You need to consider your colour scheme along with which blooms are is in season at the time. Before you meet with your wedding florist, it's always a great idea to put together a scrapbook of ideas and a list of what you'll need. Doing so will help focus your discussions and, most importantly, help you stay within budget. From the bridal bouquet to table centre pieces, flowers can transform a marque from ordinary to extraordinary and it will smell divine too.

Our bespoke wooden swings with festoon lights are full of character and rustic charm. They're perfect for holding trailing ivy or other gorgeous blooms. The height inside our marquees lend themselves perfectly to hanging installations, and our hanging hoops and wooden cartwheels create wonderful floral focal points. We highly recommend Tattie Rose Flowers, who create installations which are romantic and original. We also love Pyrus, who are renowned for cultivating unusual, scented blooms that are picture-perfect.

You might not be able to taste food online but but you can get a great idea of what a caterer offers from their website. If you like what you see, you can the organise to go for a tasting session, which is one of the most fun parts of planning a wedding! Caterers not only provide the food, but will also do the canapes, serve champagne and run the bar.

We have enjoyed working with these companies:

Jousting Catering, whose team of professional chefs are expertly lead by William Pottinger, recently a finalist in the 2015 Dumfries and Galloway Life’s Chef of the Year awards; Caterbirds, who offer wedding sample menus but are also happy to quote for any other suggestions; and The Orde Food Company, who will work with you to create your unique occasion to remember, whatever your style of wedding. For a trendy festival atmosphere, Wild Rover Food travel to weddings in land rovers and field kitchens, and use the best natural and local produce, like delicious hog roasts, to deliver fresh catering to you.

And now we are down to the little details, which DO matter! There is no need to settle for simple silverwear – there are a variety of styles around, from innovative and unusual, to vintage, to colourful and fun.

The Green Cockatoo supplies vintage and specialised china, glasses, linen and accessories. They also offer flexible event support to assist with the planning and dressing of your wedding. Caterbirds is also excellent for crockery hire, just order what you would like online and they will drop it off, and then collect it – unwashed – after your event!

Groom and Groomsmen

Fast forward to wedding week, and both groom and groomsmen are running around town trying to get fitted for a last-minute kilt or tuxedo. Just take a deep breathe and relax, because we have recommendations that will make everyone's lives a little bit easier.

MacGregor MacDuff has a fabulous range of kilts and tartans, and you can browse online to your heart's content before you (or your other half) make a decision. Anderson Kilts in Dumfries have an impressive range of kilts, jackets and accessories to buy online and at the store.

Wedding Planners

If you would prefer to have help organising your marquee wedding every step of the way, we would be delighted to help you! We also do on-scale 3D drawings of the marquee layout. We can also highly recommend wedding planners Kasmira.

Wedding Decorations and your Queensberry Marquee

Katy Coltart - Thursday, November 03, 2016

We all know it's all about the Wedding Decorations

Weddings are all about romance and celebration so you really want your marquee to look beautiful. Wedding decorations are key to creating a unique atmosphere, so in this blog we look at decorations and lighting to fit any theme, colour and style, which will help you to get your wedding marquee looking just perfect.

1. Functional Lighting

All marquees need an element of functional lighting and this comes in the classic form of chandeliers, with the optional addition of up lighters - all can be installed on dimmer switches so the light can be set to best suit the time of day/night. We tend to favour up lighters that sit at the base of the linings and light the walls of the marquee, creating a subtle but practical background light. Available in a variety of colours, they will tie in to compliment your wedding decorations theme.

Other more functional lighting might be required for catering tents, such as strip lights), or flood lights for car parks and paths to toilets.

2. Decorative Lighting

This is where the fun begins! The style of lighting you choose will depend on how you will decorate your marquee. With elegantly peaked roofs, our lit-up marquees are a truly enchanting sight, especially at night, and are perfect for evening photographs!

Add some glamour to your marquee with chandeliers, great for creating a stylish traditional wedding marquee or for adding elegance to the roof space. Our Montreux range of cream or black, or our new, stunning antler chandeliers fit in with any wedding decoration plan. Alternatively, you could even get your own design and we can rig them up. The possibilities are endless.

LED Up-Lights

Essential to add warmth and atmosphere to your marquee, lighting cans sit round the edge of the marquee. They can bring light to the entire marquee or any particular area, depending on what over-lighting you have selected (fairy lights/starcloth/festoons over dance floor don’t need up-lights). Available in white or in various colours, they shine up the walls and roof linings, giving the room a warm glow.

Fairy Lights

Twinkly fair lights can be used behind the roof lining of the marquee for a truly romantic look – these make the marquee look really special during the day and at night. We can offer a whole canopy of fairy lights to cover the roof of the marquee. You could even use fairy lights to highlight the dance floor, creating a stunning romantic space for dancing.

Festoon Lighting

These traditional large bulb lights can be strung in the roof space below the marquee linings - this bright addition is often used when bride and grooms have chosen a country-style wedding decorations theme for their marquee. Alternatively, they can be strung from the roof space either on their own or mixed with fairy lights. Our festoon lighting comes with black cables or white cables custom-made to fit the marquee. We have many different arrangements for these popular lights – visit our webpage for ideas!

For a truly special atmosphere, candles are perfect for decorating tables or even using to make your own personal centre piece. Candles won’t add enough light standing alone but they are great for adding a romance touch.

em>Paper Lanterns

These popular lighting decorations are a fun feature that adds colour as well as light to the roof space. They can be used with small battery-operated lights to provide a glow as the evening draws in.

Starcloth Linings

For the ultimate twinkle factor, starcloth linings look fabulous! Ivory starcloth is pretty and romantic while the black starcloth is usually used over a dance floor to add drama! You can choose the brightness, and you can have flashing stars, or make them twinkle like a night sky - the decision is always yours.

3. Outdoor Lighting

Don’t forget to think about lighting outside your marquee, for both practical and decorative reasons. Give your guests a truly colourful welcome by lighting a pathway, which adds to the ambiance of the wedding.

- Festoon Lighting

Strung on poles, these lights can be used to light any outdoor space adjacent to the marquee or to light a pathway to/from the marquee or around the perimeter.

- Lanterns

Lanterns look lovely when used to highlight a path or to edge an outdoor seating area.

- Coloured Spot Lights

Light up trees or buildings with spot lights in different colours to bring the inside out.

With so many options and variations of lighting to compliment all kinds of wedding decorations and themes, your marquee is guaranteed to be beautiful and unique on your special day. For ideas, our website is a great place to start!
