Party Marquee Hire 101 - Where do I start?

Katy Coltart - Friday, April 21, 2017

When planning a party, it's easy to get carried away with the finer details. Of course, the interior decor and finishing touches you choose will really make your party one to remember - but it's important to lay the foundations first. If you’re looking into party marquee hire but not sure where to begin, we’ve put together this article to help you avoid those party planning faux pas!

Marquee Size

First thing’s first. Before choosing which party marquee to hire, think carefully about your space. We can fit marquees comfortably into smaller gardens or accommodate larger guest lists. The most important element to consider is how many guests you are actually expecting. Most people naturally gravitate to the largest marquee size that their space will allow, but the number of guests should be the deciding factor for size. Our size guide is a useful starting point.

Pick too large a marquee and your party will feel sparse, even when all of your guests arrive. It’s often better to go slightly smaller than you might like, as long as you can still accommodate everybody. A bustling marquee is the key to creating a great party atmosphere!

Do you need to include flooring with your party marquee hire? Not all occasions will require wood flooring. Hard floors are great for weddings and instances when marquees are required as an extension to your interior space. But Pro-Flooring or coconut matting can also be cost effective options for exclusively outdoor events. Pro-Flooring is a heavy duty rubber matting that can be laid on grass and allows moisture to flow underneath, whilst keeping your venue dry. Planning a night on the tiles? We have an extensive range of fabulous dance floors to suit every occasion!

Party Seating

Furniture options are next on your list. Your choice will depend on the kind of event you are hosting. For example, a children’s birthday party will require a different seating plan than an intimate drinks doo. Go-to round tables and chairs are great for a wedding reception, but if you’re throwing a garden party you will need the space to be more flexible. Consider using whisky barrels that guests can stand beside whilst milling around with stools also provided. We find that a mix of seating works best, combining whisky barrels with soft seating allows your party to evolve with your guests’ needs throughout the day and into the night. We’ve all welcomed a comfy seat after a few hours on the dancefloor! And then, the real fun starts! We have a vast range of optional accessories to set the theme, from rustic whisky barrel tables to elegant chandelier lighting - don’t worry, we’re on hand with an expert pair of hands to help craft your perfect venue. Queensberry Event Hires Guide to Marquee Hire Prices

Katy Coltart - Monday, February 13, 2017

Hiring a marquee can be expensive and for most people an unfamiliar experience. Below, we attempt to help you answer some basic questions about marquees that we hope will help you decide if a marquee is the right option for you.

How much does it cost to hire a marquee?

How long is a piece of string? The prices on our marquee price list range from £400 to over £5000. These prices include matting, standard lighting, delivery and set up, and, for the higher of the two prices for each size, marquee lining as well. Furniture will need to be factored on top. Unfortunately, working out how much your marquee will cost isn't always totally straightforward.

  • The quickest way to get an rough idea of prices is to request a quote from us. Include plans for your event: seated area for how many? Bar and dance floor space? Night guests?
  • Another simple way is to use the fact that marquees typically cost between £15 and £50 per person. The lower price is for a basic unlined marquee with matting, simple lighting and furniture. The higher price would be for the marquee with absolutely everything - hard floor, carpet, special lighting, chill out areas etc. Most marques fall within the £20 to £30 bracket. So pick a number that seems about right for the sort of marquee you want and then multiply that by the number of guests you expect. That will give you a rough idea of the cost of a marquee.
  • For a rough guide, we also have a few sample marquee hire prices of different event types available.
  • You will then need to add furniture and accessories on top of this. We have a range of decorations available in our Hire Collection

For an accurate marquee hire price, please feel free to contact us. Or you can request a quote, giving as much detail as possible for your event.

Queensberry Event Hire tips for a Spring Wedding

Katy Coltart - Wednesday, February 01, 2017

Summer marquee weddings may benefit from better weather but tying the knot in spring is becoming more and more popular! Spring is such a romantic time of year, and an off-season wedding has many perks, including more available options for services including locations, catering and wedding planners. Easter weddings are great as you can take full advantage of the long weekend! And the beauty of having a marquee is that you can carry the celebrations on by using the space the next day for post-wedding festivities.

If you choose a Scottish marquee wedding in spring, just remember to plan ahead and play it safe by considering all the little extras that the season might affect.

Time of Year

Don't get caught out by a spring shower! Our pro-floor and coconut matting walkways into the marquee are a good idea if the weather has been particularly wet it will keep everything clean and stop high heels sinking into damp ground. Spring brings beautifully sunny days with clear blue skies but it can be chilly - don't let that put you off as hiring a heater is both simple and effective. Our energy-efficient, thermostat-controlled ducted marquee heaters are easy to control and will keep guests at a comfortable temperature throughout the day and night.

Lighting & Decoration

The atmosphere you create is determined by the kind of lighting you choose and how it ties in with your day. Spring is the perfect time to play with colours and lighting. For a country-style spring marquee, look at our range of chandeliers or hanging paper lanterns, and for a more dramatic effect when it gets dark, coloured up lighters outside are fabulous. For the "wow" factor on the dance floor, a fairy light canopy helps to create a fun, warm atmosphere on your big day. Think about how to personalise the marquee to make it perfect for you. Spring is the perfect time for seasonal floral centre pieces to add colourful flair to your big day. See our recommended wedding planners and florists, who will have lots of ideas on how to beautify your marquee to your personal taste.

Extra Space

We can bring the outside in with our gorgeous marquees with clear walls, so you don't miss out on views, whatever the weather. For extra space to play with, we can add a pagoda marquee onto the side of the main structure and it can be used as a welcoming reception area or a comfy chill-out area. We can supply heaters and stylish coffee tables and sofas, or benches and whisky barrels. This extra space is also handy for storing coat rails and wedding present tables. There are no limits to the catering options at a spring marquee wedding. It could be a formal meal, a buffet or even a warming hog roast. our recommended caterers will be more than happy to discuss top-quality, seasonal produce. One aspect you will need to remember is access to running water. It is important to consider this when looking at where to put the marquee.

Most portable toilet units now are spacious and can be nicely decorated to match your theme and provide luxury for you and your guests, even in the middle of a field. We can also put a marquee over the toilets, adjoining to the main marquee so no one gets wet if it rains! So don't be put off by the weather; spring is the time for new beginnings, and what better way to begin the year than with an unforgettable Scottish marquee wedding!

Our Guide to Plan your Wedding Online

Katy Coltart - Monday, December 19, 2016

Here at Queensberry, we’ve had a summer filled with stunning marquee weddings. A marquee wedding is an ideal option if you’re looking for a beautiful venue with personal creative control…you don’t need to worry about swirly carpet patterns or dodgy decorative elements that clash with your own unique design vision.   A marquee is ultimately a big, white box with huge creative potential and every little aspect of the space in your styling will need to be considered.  Luckily, there is an abundance of top quality services and suggestions online to help you with every small detail! Here are our top tips on where to look for marquee wedding inspiration.

Interior Design

Pinterest is the perfect place to look for ideas on how to fill your marquee space. The social bookmarking site, where users collect and share their favourite photos, is a visual wedding paradise – and all you need to do is find the pictures you like and recreate!

On our website we have Pinterest Save built into each page (the red button on the top left with the social media icons) which, when pressed, brings up all the images on the page of our website you are visiting and then allows you to pin those images to your own board – allowing you to clearly plan each part of the marquee. Why not create a board for the marquee style you like, a board for lighting, a board for wedding flowers, a board for bars/dance floors etc and pin our images to the board to help you plan and visualise your unique event!

Remember to have a peek on our Instagram Page, which shows how previous clients have decorated their marquee space to perfection.

When planning the interior of your wedding marquee, focus on creating a few key zones: Chill-Out: If all the celebrations take place within one main marquee then a chill-out zone is a must, and this is where you can go wild with your own design stamp. Keep the vibe inside comfy with our sofas and coffee tables or why not create a separate room and we can join a pagoda marquee to your main marquee, with optional clear walls and a glass door decorated with your choice of lights.

For additional wow factor, give your guests the ultimate entrance and chill out area, by adding an outdoor drinks and seating area lit by festoon lights with a firepit surrounded by benches and whisky barrels.

Bar: A space that’s guaranteed to get the most use, you can really go to town dressing it up. To make sure the area stands out, you could light up the roof overhead with paper lanterns, coloured festoons or LED fairylights or up-lights. You could also use an ivory or black starcloth behind the bar to add drama and provide the ultimate party experience! These multi-coloured lights can be set to twinkle and you can control the colours, brightness and flashing sequence. Our new, lighted circular bar is an exciting addition which will provide the perfect party focal point. Alternatively, we have classic corner bar units and rustic limewashed bar units, which could be dressed up with wooden or limewashed whisky barrels on either side holding draping foliage or hold displays and decorations. Write up the drink menu on the blackout chalk board or lean our cartwheel against the bar with the cocktails menu hooked to it… there are so many options to choose from!

A wedding isn't a wedding without floral fancies. You need to consider your colour scheme along with which blooms are is in season at the time. Before you meet with your wedding florist, it's always a great idea to put together a scrapbook of ideas and a list of what you'll need. Doing so will help focus your discussions and, most importantly, help you stay within budget. From the bridal bouquet to table centre pieces, flowers can transform a marque from ordinary to extraordinary and it will smell divine too.

Our bespoke wooden swings with festoon lights are full of character and rustic charm. They're perfect for holding trailing ivy or other gorgeous blooms. The height inside our marquees lend themselves perfectly to hanging installations, and our hanging hoops and wooden cartwheels create wonderful floral focal points. We highly recommend Tattie Rose Flowers, who create installations which are romantic and original. We also love Pyrus, who are renowned for cultivating unusual, scented blooms that are picture-perfect.

You might not be able to taste food online but but you can get a great idea of what a caterer offers from their website. If you like what you see, you can the organise to go for a tasting session, which is one of the most fun parts of planning a wedding! Caterers not only provide the food, but will also do the canapes, serve champagne and run the bar.

We have enjoyed working with these companies:

Jousting Catering, whose team of professional chefs are expertly lead by William Pottinger, recently a finalist in the 2015 Dumfries and Galloway Life’s Chef of the Year awards; Caterbirds, who offer wedding sample menus but are also happy to quote for any other suggestions; and The Orde Food Company, who will work with you to create your unique occasion to remember, whatever your style of wedding. For a trendy festival atmosphere, Wild Rover Food travel to weddings in land rovers and field kitchens, and use the best natural and local produce, like delicious hog roasts, to deliver fresh catering to you.

And now we are down to the little details, which DO matter! There is no need to settle for simple silverwear – there are a variety of styles around, from innovative and unusual, to vintage, to colourful and fun.

The Green Cockatoo supplies vintage and specialised china, glasses, linen and accessories. They also offer flexible event support to assist with the planning and dressing of your wedding. Caterbirds is also excellent for crockery hire, just order what you would like online and they will drop it off, and then collect it – unwashed – after your event!

Groom and Groomsmen

Fast forward to wedding week, and both groom and groomsmen are running around town trying to get fitted for a last-minute kilt or tuxedo. Just take a deep breathe and relax, because we have recommendations that will make everyone's lives a little bit easier.

MacGregor MacDuff has a fabulous range of kilts and tartans, and you can browse online to your heart's content before you (or your other half) make a decision. Anderson Kilts in Dumfries have an impressive range of kilts, jackets and accessories to buy online and at the store.

Wedding Planners

If you would prefer to have help organising your marquee wedding every step of the way, we would be delighted to help you! We also do on-scale 3D drawings of the marquee layout. We can also highly recommend wedding planners Kasmira.
